Making Tax Digital: What It Means for You and How Adena Accountancy Can Help

If you’re still tracking expenses in a spreadsheet or scrambling for receipts at year-end, big changes are on the horizon. The UK government’s Making Tax Digital (MTD) initiative is transforming how businesses and individuals report and pay tax.

The goal? To modernise HMRC, reduce errors, and make tax simpler by moving everything online.

While the benefits are clear—better accuracy, fewer surprises, and more control—many self-employed professionals and small businesses find the shift daunting. The good news is that with the right support and software, MTD doesn’t have to be stressful.

At Adena Accountancy, we provide FreeAgent software (worth £330 a year) completely free to all clients, alongside unlimited expert support to guide you through every step.

Here’s what you need to know.

What is Making Tax Digital?

MTD is HMRC’s long-term plan to digitise the UK tax system. Under the new rules, you’ll need to:

      • Keep digital records of your income and expenses

      • Use HMRC-approved software to submit returns

      • File updates more frequently, instead of one big annual return

The rollout is happening in stages: first VAT, then Income Tax, and eventually Corporation Tax.

    Making Tax Digital for VAT

    Since April 2022, all VAT-registered businesses—no matter their turnover—must:

        • Maintain digital records

        • Use MTD-compatible software to file VAT returns

        • Stop using the HMRC portal for manual submissions

If you’re VAT registered, you’re already under MTD rules. The bigger changes are coming for self-employed people and landlords.

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD for ITSA)

This is the next major milestone and will affect sole traders and landlords with income above certain thresholds:

          • From April 2026: Income over £50,000 must comply

          • From April 2027: Income over £30,000 must comply

Under MTD for ITSA, you’ll need to:

            • Use HMRC-recognised software like FreeAgent

            • Submit quarterly updates instead of one annual return

            • File a year-end “check” (End of Period Statement) and a Final Declaration

HMRC will then calculate your tax bill based on your digital submissions.

What This Means for Your Business

Here’s how MTD will change the way you work:

              • Quarterly reporting → more regular bookkeeping, fewer year-end surprises

              • Mandatory software → spreadsheets and paper won’t be enough

              • Real-time tax visibility → know where you stand throughout the year

              • Fewer mistakes → automated calculations cut down errors and penalties

              • New habits → tax becomes part of your business rhythm, not a yearly panic

It may feel like extra admin at first, but with the right tools, MTD gives you more control, clarity, and confidence in your finances.

Why This Is an Opportunity, Not Just a Burden

With FreeAgent, you’ll gain more than just compliance:

                • Snap and upload receipts instantly

                • Automatic tax calculations in real-time

                • Simple invoicing, payment reminders, and bank reconciliation

                • Live cash flow, profit & loss, and balance sheet reports

                • Direct collaboration with your accountant—no more chasing paperwork

In short, MTD can actually make running your business easier.

Making Tax Digital for Corporation Tax

Corporation Tax isn’t changing yet. HMRC has confirmed:

                  • No digital filing required before 2026

                  • Pilot schemes will run before rollout

We’ll keep you updated as new details are released.
